Eat Like Your Favorite Team This Game Day

For some, this Sunday is mostly about the halftime show. For others, the puppies. But if you’re here, we’re guessing you take your game day appetizers seriously. You’re plotting a spread of Lemon-Pepper Artichoke Wings and Mini Onion Blossoms, Buffalo Chickpea Dip and Hot and Smoky Tang Wings. But adding a touch of Kansas City or San Francisco to your menu will give your party snacks and drinks a little more team pride. Inspired by the upcoming Bon Appétit and MGM Rewards Tailgate in Vegas, we’ve gathered some game day recipes below so you’ll be ready for kickoff on February 11.

Let’s get this clear: You can’t talk about Kansas City food without mentioning burnt ends. But if you don't have access to the real thing (or you don’t eat beef), you can still honor Kansas City barbecue, slathering this sweet, thick sauce on ribs, chicken, or even grilled vegetables. You may want to grab some of this good-on-everything rub while you’re at it.

Garlic fries are a San Francisco thing, perhaps because the garlic farms—and garlic festival—of Gilroy, California isn’t that far away. This recipe skips the deep-frying in favor of a hot, hot oven.

You could certainly serve tacos to honor San Francisco, or roll thick burritos filled with carnitas or chorizo. But we recommend this crispy chicken sandwich recipe from the Nopalito cookbook, layered with refried beans, avocado, and morita chile salsa.

Several of Kansas city’s iconic restaurants serve fried chicken with cinnamon butter-topped rolls. Give yours an overnight buttermilk brine for optimal flavor.

This recipe comes from Sylvain Mishima Bracket, chef at Rintaro, one of our favorite Bay Area restaurants. Be sure to serve these juicy chicken meatballs hot, right off the grill.

You may see toasted ravioli more often in St. Louis than in Kansas City, but this Missouri specialty is still worth recreating at your Super Bowl party.

Too cold outside to grill? Go for this easy oven method, and serve the ribs with coleslaw, potato salad, and cheesy corn.

Make your game day margaritas the way they do at Tommy’s in San Francisco—no Cointreau, just tequila, lime, and a touch of agave to sweeten.
